I'm helping to raise $20K to support AFS-USA's study abroad diversity scholarship initiative, Faces of America.
Give Because: My AFS experience put me on my career trajectory.
Hi! My name is John, and I’m an Alum of an incredible program called AFS-USA Faces of America (FoA). For two decades, FoA has been providing full study abroad scholarships to U.S. teens who – like me – want to see the world but can’t afford the cost of studying abroad. AFS-USA is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of FoA this year, and because my AFS experience was so invaluable, I’m helping to raise $20K to give future teens the same type of opportunities I had.
Why am I doing this? Because studying abroad truly changed my life.
The FoA scholarship allowed me to get out of the Bronx, New York (my hometown) and access another culture. I spent a summer with AFS in Costa Rica learning Spanish and doing community service. I will never forget the day a group of school kids came out and asked for my autograph! They were so curious and wanted to know all about me. Something clicked in that moment and I suddenly wanted to be a more open person, to learn about other people and cultures, and to keep pursuing new experiences.
This perspective led me to spend a summer in college working at an HIV clinic in South Africa, and later to enter to the Peace Corps, where I was assigned as a health volunteer in Peru. While providing preventative care for Peruvian mothers and children, I fell in love with Public Health and I’m now pursuing a graduate degree in Global Public Health at Emory University.
FoA put me on this trajectory. My experience studying abroad with AFS as a teenager made me want to keep exploring the world, to work internationally, and to help people from different cultures. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, forcing me to learn another language and assimilate into a different culture. As a result, I can now go anywhere and adapt quickly – an essential skill for global health workers.
The Bottom Line:
AFS changed my life and without the scholarship I would not be where I am today. So please, help me provide other students with this life-changing experience. Support my campaign to help raise $20,000 for FoA scholarships today! Any amount helps. And if you’re wondering exactly what kind of impact your donation will have, here’s a helpful index:
- $5 - $10 shows support for diversity scholarships!
- $20 buys a student's official AFS T-Shirt (worn for orientation and travel days)
- $100 covers Pre-Departure Orientation materials
- $200 pays the Application Fee
- $500 pays the Program Deposit
- $1,500 covers international airfare
