I'm helping to raise $20K to support AFS-USA's study abroad diversity scholarship initiative, Faces of America.
Give Because: Studying abroad empowers students to have an global impact.
Thanks for visiting! My name is Nersa, and I’m an Alum of an incredible program called AFS-USA Faces of America (FoA). For two decades, FoA has been providing full study abroad scholarships to U.S. teens who – like me – want to see the world but can’t afford the cost of studying abroad. AFS-USA is currently celebrating the 20th Anniversary of FoA, and because my AFS experience was so invaluable to me, I’m helping to raise $20K to give future teens the same type of opportunities I had.
Why? Because studying abroad had a huge impact on my life.
I spent a summer in Paraguay with AFS learning Spanish and teaching English to elementary school kids. My host community of Pilar, Paraguay and the surrounding small town were a far cry from my native Chicago. The communities were so tightly knit, everyone was so nice, and I loved learning about their culture – from their food to their history. It was all so amazing, especially since I had never left the U.S. before.
Of course, I knew the experience would have a significant impact on me. But what I didn’t realize was how much I would impact the people I came in contact with. I will never forget when, a few days before my program ended, all the kids I taught gave me gifts with handwritten notes in English. Those gestures had so much sentimental value, and they made me realize that I wanted to continue helping kids.
Currently, I’m a freshman at Virginia State University and I serve as a mentor at the local Girls and Boys club. I spend three to four afternoons a week tutoring and mentoring a group of students, and I really feel like I can help them achieve a better future.
As for my own future, I hope to become a travel photographer and continue exploring the world. Thanks to my AFS experience, I’m no longer afraid of doing things on my own or being in new places.
The Bottom Line:
You can only learn so much about the world from books. But through studying abroad and being immersed in a foreign environment, you learn so much so quickly, and you educate the people around you.
However, for me and many other deserving students, study abroad would not be possible without the FoA scholarship. So please, support my campaign to help raise $20,000 for FoA scholarships today! Any amount helps. And if you’re wondering exactly what kind of impact your donation will have, here’s a helpful index:
- $5 - $10 shows support for diversity scholarships!
- $20 buys a student's official AFS T-Shirt (worn for orientation and travel days)
- $100 covers Pre-Departure Orientation materials
- $200 pays the Application Fee
- $500 pays the Program Deposit
- $1,500 covers international airfare
