I'm helping to raise $20K to support AFS-USA's study abroad diversity scholarship initiative, Faces of America.
Give Because: You'll help U.S. teens connect with teens from abroad
Hello! My name is Sarah, and I’m an Alumna of an incredible program called AFS-USA Faces of America (FoA). For two decades, FoA has been providing full study abroad scholarships to U.S. teens who – like me – come from families that can’t afford the costs of study abroad. AFS-USA is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of FoA this year, and I’m helping them raise $20K to help future teens have the same type of experience I did.
I come from a low-income family with a single mom who works hard to support 4 kids. I always wanted to study abroad, but I never thought it was possible until I received the FoA scholarship. Finding out that I would get to fulfill my dream of going abroad was truly amazing.
Why? Because studying abroad truly changed my life! Here’s how:
I Learned to Listen
Before I went to Turkey, I was a very vocal (okay, sometimes loud) leader. But when I arrived in Istanbul with no knowledge of the Turkish language, I had become a listener and an observer. I learned to pick up on body language, and now I’m a much more perceptive person. I know how to allow others to have their moment while supporting them from behind.
I Opened Myself Up
I also learned to open my mind to new and different things. When I go to college in the fall, I plan to study International Business so that I can continue exploring. I will never be the same – and that’s a good thing!
I Made Friends on the Other Side of the World
Perhaps most importantly, studying abroad allowed me to connect with teenagers from another part of the world who previously seemed so different from me. I was shocked to find out how many interests we shared – from TV shows, to books, to music – even though we live thousands of miles apart.
The Bottom Line:
Please help me provide other students with this life-changing experience. Support my campaign to help raise $20,000 for FoA scholarships today! Any amount helps. And if you’re wondering exactly what kind of impact your donation will have, here’s a handy index:
- $5 - $10 shows support for diversity scholarships!
- $20 buys a student's official AFS T-Shirt (worn for orientation and travel days)
- $100 covers Pre-Departure Orientation materials
- $200 pays the Application Fee
- $500 pays the Program Deposit
- $1,500 covers international airfare
