The Story

A year ago we asked for support in relocating 31 women and 198 children in Uganda to a safe home before their IDP (internally displaced person) camp was bulldozed. The women were refugees from the Kony war. Amazingly you heard our plea for support and helped us raise $31,687 in just 10 weeks!

We are now hoping for your support again. Given their unique circumstances, the women now NEED some basic necessities that we can provide!!

Uganda

THE RELOCATION

In December of 2014 our team went to Uganda to begin the relocation process and 31 new homes were constructed this year!

We visited the women in August and we were all so excited to be together! We spent the day laughing, singing and eating at a celebration they had planned for us. The women especially wanted YOU to know how much they appreciate all you have done. Your generosity changed 229 lives forever!

WE LEARNED…

We encouraged the women to share their experiences. Initially they were reluctant to speak because they did not want to appear ungrateful, but as we kept insisting, they finally spoke. As the women struggled to learn new ways and worked to overcome challenges they encountered, the fact remained that life in the north had not been easy.

  • The homes were mostly located in rural locations and for some, the closest borehole was 2-3 kilometers away. Each person can carry 1-2 jerry cans per trip, depending on the distance and the size of the can, which meant multiple daily trips.
  • Basic cooking supplies (cups, plates, basins and a stove) were lacking.
  • The market and trading centers were often very far.  Walking to the market meant you could return home only with what you could balance on your head or carry in your arms.
  • The income and food that would be generated from owning chickens, goats and cows required owning these animals, which the women did not.
  • The new homes did not have latrines.
  • Most families were sleeping on straw matts on dirt floors and were not getting proper rest.

REQUESTING YOUR SUPPORT

As a result of our meeting in August, we have identified specific basic needs, relative to the woman's unique circumstances, that we need to support:

  • Jerry cans for water
  • Cups, dishes, cooking pans and stoves
  • Mattresse, sheets and blankets
  • A family bike for personal transportation and for transporting supplies
  • Chickens, a goat and a cow

OUR GOAL

We want to provide these most basic and critical items to each of the 31 families to promote the opportunity for success in their new communities.
