AFTER SCHOOL MATTERS INC

After School Matters

After School Matters is a Chicago-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to provide Chicago public high school teens with opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond.

During the out-of-school time hours, After School Matters provides more than 15,000 Chicago teens with high-quality, hands-on, project-based apprenticeships. From cancer research to commissioned art pieces and performance ballet, After School Matters teens make a difference in their communities and gain vital skills necessary for college, career, and life.

More than 70 percent of After School Matters teens reside in Chicago's lowest income communities, of which 97 percent are of color and 87 percent are living in poverty. The highest population of teens come from the Austin neighborhood on the west side, where the annual per capita income is just $15,957. Austin is plagued by crime and gang violence and is also shadowed by one of the highest homicide rates in the city.

By providing out-of-school time programming in Chicago's most underserved communities, After School Matters not only connects teens with adult mentors, but helps reduce educational inequity and break the cycle of poverty. Moreover, After School Matters keeps teens safe and off the streets during the most pivotal and dangerous hours of the day. Over the course of one ten week program, teens can receive up to 140 hours of positive, adult interaction. When a teen participates throughout the entire year, this number triples and helps teens reach the same level of interaction with positive adult role models as their more affluent peers.

Ultimately, After School Matters teens are more likely to be engaged in school, graduate, and enroll in college than their peers.
