THE STORY:

I hated running.

On Saturday, May 10th 2014 I was set to run my first race.  I chose to run the ABTA 5K (American Brain Tumor Assoc) after my Dad was diagonosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer, just 14 months earlier.  I had dreadfully trained (until I met the LRC) for the race and was ready to start, with intentions of fiercely competing with a few of my best and most competitive friends joining in the race.

Instead, my also very competitive Dad, gave me a nod to say he wanted to give the race a go as well.  In the midst of chemo-thearpy, radiation and clinical trial drugs, he was ready to race.  He was in no condition to run, but had battled through treatment as the champion I had looked up to my whole life.  Still playing racquetball 3-5 days per week, enjoying life, family and friends like he always had and even biking to his chemotherapy treatments, he wasn't giving up.

As the gun went off and I watched my friends explode off the starting line ahead, I enjoyed one of the best walks and talks I've ever had with my Dad that day.  Our time was nothing to brag about, finishing in just under an hour, but the time spent was a PR I'll keep with me forever.

My Dad passed away just 28 days later.   He continues to be my hero and inspires me and others he's touched each and every day.  I now run with him, in every training and race stride I take.  Reflecting on our time together and all he's taught along the way.  I'm running this race to continue my time with him.  I've used this opportunity to now really enjoy running (with the help of the Libertyville Running Club), as it's now a time for me to continue to reflect and think about what matters most.

I will run the NYC 2016 marathon to raise money for Brain Cancer awareness, with a personal goal of raising $5000.  This will hopefully be my 2nd of 3 marathons in 2 years, with plans to run Boston this April.  Running is now my outlet, my peace and my time to think.  It's something I now look forward to and crave.  Running is not for everyone, but peace of mind and time to think is a beautiful thing.  Something everyone deserves and needs.  Outside of bringing awareness to Brain Cancer, I also hope this get's people thinking about what their "running" is and then set time for it and enjoy!

Thanks and love to all.  Derek
