What would you do if an old friend contacted you and was desperate and didn't know where else to turn?

So I listened to this friend, who I am going to call Sarah to maintain her privacy, who told me stories of how her entire life has been filled with abuse and molestation. Sarah grew up with being molested in her own home and the person who was supposed to protect her, her mother, told her to deal with it. So what does Sarah do next, what would you do. Sarah gets married young and then soon pregnant, her first husband was physically abusive left when Sarah was pregnant with their third child and came back seven months later and beat her. No one deserves this....

So they divorce and Sarah later remarries, this time to a much better man. Because of her health issues, remember she is disabled, she is unable to have any more children. At some point during the marriage he decides that he wants to have a child, even though he knew that was not possible. He starts telling Sarah that he does not love her anymore. This goes on for years...until he decides he want to divorce her.

So now Sarah is faced with a decision. She has her youngest 14 year old daughter, living with and that wants to stay with her and start a new life over in a better place, Sarah is unemployed due to her disability, her only income coming from social security. Her first husband is supposed to be paying child support, but he is out of work...

So what does Sarah do next? Her family has all but abanonded her, she is living away from where she grew up and doesn't have any family or friends in the area. Sarah can't move back to where her mom & ex-husband live, she knows nothing but pain there. Sarah wants to start a new life over with her daughter but has very limited resources.

So she contacts and old friend, crying not knowing what to do next and asks for my help. She would like to move to a new area, her daughter has never seen the ocean before and she knew I lived by the ocean and wanted to know if I could help her find a place to live here. At least she would have one friend there she could count on.

Oh...I almost forgot, she was scheduled to go into the hospital the next day due to some issues she was having with her heart. She even couldn't think straight and needed someone to help make some decisions for her. So I committed to help her and her daugther start a new life.

I had no idea the challanges I had ahead of me. We talked about what she could afford, not sure how anyone could survive on social security. Not knowing anything about supplemented rent, I start looking into it, only to find out two things, first you need to be a resident for 6 months to qualify for housing, and second the federal goverment had stopped issuing vouchers for assisted housing. Oh...and there is a huge waiting list right now.

What to do, what to do....I don't have the financial means to support her family as well as mine. She needs to get out of the negative environment that she is in as soon as possible, but I am not sure how she can afford housing anywhere. So I decided that I needed some help. This is where you come in...

I want to help cover her expenses for 6 - 12 months untll she can get into assisted housing, or figure out how she can get additional income. Plus she needs to get her daugher into a good school system. I figure that I need to raise about $5000 to cover her rent for 6 month and pay to relocate her. All donations will be greatly appreciated, and we will keep you posted and share photos of their smiling faces when they are in their new place.
