The Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. is honored to be a partner charity for the Boston Marathon next April -- the second year in a row.
The tragedy that occurred at the 2013 Boston Marathon spurred a wave of solidarity with the people of Boston and renewed public commitment to defusing the causes of extremism. For us, running 26.2 miles through Boston’s streets is a chance to embody that commitment.
Our work focuses on helping communities transform their lives from a situation of poverty to one of opportunity and ownership. Starting with community-based approaches to meeting basic human needs, we invest in strengthening local institutions, laying the groundwork to long-term development and lasting solutions to poverty. Everything we do is grounded in a set of underlying principles and ethics: pluralism, compassion, respect for human dignity and solidarity with the less fortunate.
The Aga Khan Foundation, alongside its sister Aga Khan Development Network agencies, has implemented innovative, award-winning, and community-driven solutions to development challenges for over 45 years. It focuses on specific issues in the areas of health, education, rural development, civil society, and the environment by forming intellectual and financial partnerships with organizations sharing its values and objectives. The Foundation is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of private development agencies founded by His Highness the Aga Khan, with mandates ranging from social development to architecture, culture, microfinance, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise, and the revitalization of historic cities. With a small staff, a host of cooperating agencies, and thousands of volunteers, the Foundation reaches out to vulnerable populations on four continents, irrespective of their race, religion, political persuasion, or gender.
