Gardening encourages children to see the world as their classroom and draw lessons from real life experiences becoming active participants in their education. For 40 years, the National Gardening Association (NGA) has lead the way in garden-based education, providing resources proven to create engaging learning environments for students enabling them to develop enduring understandings that reach beyond the traditional school curriculum.
Today, school gardens play an increasingly crucial role in developing sound nutritional attitudes and respect for nature. Studies have shown that using gardening as a tool for growth yields academic, health, and environmental benefits including: – Increased knowledge retention – Better application of knowledge across the curriculum – Improved self-esteem – Increased understanding and access to healthy food choices
With continued help from individual donors, we have awarded nearly 10,000 grants for garden programs, giving over 1.6 million youth the opportunity to experience memorable, hands-on lessons that instill the essential connection between people and our environment. We have witnessed, firsthand, the significant impact of garden-based education programs on youth participants and believe that all children need and deserve to have access to gardens in their daily lives. To meet this need, we call for A Garden in Every School® so that every child can experience the benefits of a living, breathing classroom.
To continue this important work, we need your support. Help us grow – one child, one school, one community at a time. Take this opportunity to join us in making a difference in the lives of young people.
