17 years ago, Public Allies Chicago selected me to be part of their AmeriCorps Apprenticeship. I was placed at the Illinois Center for Violence Prevention. where I supported teenagers across Illinois to stand up against dating violence. Through Public Allies, I developed a leadership practice rooted in the values of inclusion, collaboration, continuous learning, integrity and building communities based on its strengths (as opposed to just focusing on its deficits). I found mentors and developed professional connections that continue to sustain my work today. In short, it gave me my "big break" in the social change business.
On Giving Tuesday, I'm kicking off a personal fundraiser for Public Allies. Your contribution will ensure that we can extend more "big breaks" to more Opportunity Youth in 2013. (These are the underemployed or out of school, that are looking for an opportunity to both build their career and their communities.) Stay tuned, as I will be updating my videos, giving shout-outs PBS pledge-style.
In the meantime, enjoy the pics from 1997.
