THE STORY:

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

Cancer has (for better or worse) been a part of my life since birth. My father was diagnosed with cancer just before I was born and he lost his long fight in 1980. A decade later my Irish Nonnie (my dad's mom) also started her long battle with cancers. The tough cookie that she was, she survived breast and colon cancer. A little over another decade later, my mother fought and won her battle with breast cancer.

It's easier to say that cancer has been an ugly demon in our lives, but I don't think I would be as empathetic without seeing the devastation first hand, nor possess the power to want to raise awareness for prevention and eradication.

In 2003, I met my husband. His Aunt Holly works with the BCCR and we have been walking or running every year since 2004. I recruited my wonderful circle of girlfriends to volunteer at dawn (let's just say REALLY early) at the Registration tables. Each year, more of our girlfriends, their mother's and husbands, babies, and friends join us.

In 2008, my mother, then a cancer survivor, walked with us for the first time! It was a cold but wonderful event with all of our freinds and families together. Each year I walk or run with her and my Irish Nonnie in my heart.

In 2010, I was so happy to welcome the early registrants again at dawn with my husband, my amazing girlfriends and my new son-to-be. Yes, I was 7 months pregnant and exited to walk the Pink Ribbon. Being the unlocking of spring, I think we did more gabbing and pacing than a direct 3 mile walk. I love Rochester springs and seeing everyone out and about!! In 2011, my husband and I tagged teamed the walk with Avery, our 9 month old, whom really was fighting to get out of the baby bjorn and walk it himself, which he did in 2012 and again in 2013 with his soon-to-be born sister.

This year will be my 11th Pink Ribbon. Over a decade ago, a group of girlfriends formed a new and strong knit circle. Together, we grew from college days to our first career, from boyfriends to weddings, from first pregnancies to toddler playdates. Our research over the years has changed from school distric job openings to real estate open house, from infertility to breastfeeding tips. This year marks the time that we are researching Breast Cancer. The worry of c-sections is past, and now we are moving on to other medical concerns. A third bridesmaid from our wedding is now on her personal journey to slay the cancer dragon. This is #3 that thankfully went in for an early check / mammogram. I can not imagine how different their paths could be if they had to wait until age 40, like some of our insurance providers require. One thing our circle of girlfriends have learned over the years... ask questions. Ask your doctor, call your insurance company, chat with your girlfriends... and stay off the crazy-people blogs!!!

With grace, patience and a strong back, I will be walking this year with my husband, Joe, and our little Shaverlings; Avery and Thalia. Our circle of girlfriends keeps growing. I hope you can join us. Hopefully we can work towards our first 5k in a few years with the kids!!

Each year I try to collect one more person to walk or run.  I know my father, Nonnie and mother will be walking with us in spirit. I ask that you will either come walk or run with us, or please donate to our team. And of course, whether male or female, be UdderWise!
