TREMENDOUS PROGRESS SINCE 2010
For five years, Akilah has been changing the lives of young African women through market-relevant education and leadership training. As participants in local industry and the professional workforce, these women have increased their lifetime earning potential fivefold and improved living conditions for their families and the next generation. Ninety percent of Akilah graduates are employed within six months of graduation!
GROWTH BEYOND 2015
By 2015, the Akilah student body will grow to 550 students across two campuses in Rwanda and Burundi, with more than 50 professional and passionate faculty and staff dedicated to revolutionizing higher education and career opportunities for women in Africa.
In this critical year of institutional development, Akilah must make key investments in:
- Systems, technology, and educational materials – to build a digital campus, integrate computers and the internet into our classrooms, and give students the technical skills to compete in the modern workforce;
- Faculty development and capacity building – to train, develop, and hire the best and most committed teachers;
- Student services and activities – to expand counseling, activities, and extracurriculars for students’ professional and social growth;
- The Student Scholarship Fund – to invest in more women who would not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue higher education.
WHY SUPPORT AKILAH?
Women serve as powerful agents of change when empowered and given the tools to participate in the formal economy.
Yet, there remain very few opportunities for young women in East Africa to gain the skills and education needed to prepare them for meaningful livelihoods and economic independence.
80% of women in East Africa still work in subsistence agriculture, earning less than $2 per day. University is an expensive option for a select few. Only 1% attend university and just 30% of those are women.
We created Akilah as a visionary new educational model for low-income young women. The nurturing environment provides a space where young women can heal some of the trauma of their past while gaining market-driven skills to launch meaningful careers, improve their earning potential, and take control over their own lives.
Akilah students are breaking through the cultural, social, and economic barriers that hold so many women back, permanently disrupting the cycle of poverty and creating better, healthier, and more prosperous lives for their families and children.
BUT DOES IT WORK?
Magnificently! Our results prove the value of our model: a 90% job placement rate within six months of graduation. Our graduates earn 5x the national average in East Africa and leave Akilah ready to launch their professional careers, take control of their own lives, and impact their family, community, and country.
Put simply, Akilah provides a bridge between the education system and the jobs in the fast-growing private sector.
