My dad, Robert Sims, was an All-American defensive lineman who loved the idea of 'his sons' playing football. As they say, life has a funny way of working itself out and (for Dad) that meant a reality of four daughters. Lucky for him - us girls lived, breathed, and dreamt sports.
Through sports, Dad taught us about life. He rallied us by saying "Let's go Sports Fans!" and whether or not we asked for it, consistently played the 'coach' card.
As I grew older, anytime I seeked his advice he drew a sports comparison. "Shelby, you have to be hungry, mean, and 'cool under pressure" like Kobe. (he loved dropping Kobe). He’d follow that with, "success is about failing, you have to get up and go for it over and over again."
In 2009, ‘Coach’ was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocycitc Leukemia. Again, he exhibited everything he taught us --- giving your 100% and not choking under stress. But sometimes the whistle blows and the game ends up not swaying your way. In December 2015, dad’s jersey number officially retired.
Robert Sims was a Boston Marathon finisher in 1994. As a ‘forever father-daughter team’, I’ll be crossing the finish line this year with Aktiv Against Cancer to raise awareness about exercise and its integral part of cancer treatment.
I'm running in tribute of my dad #simstrong, for young kids who've lost a parent, families who've lost a loved one, and especially for the ones fighting cancer right now. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your contribution.
