BENEFITING: UNIQUE PROJECT INC
ORGANIZER: Broadway Bound
EVENT: The 1st Annual Broadway Bee
EVENT DATE: May 09, 2016
I grew up fortunate enough to be able to participate in school plays and musicals, but one of the biggest reasons why I sought it out in school was a result of having had an amazing theatre program early on (Natick drama workshop) that I could participate in out of school. Such opportunities do not abound as a norm. My dear friend, Erin Glass, started the after school program in nyc, Broadway Bound Kids, in order to give as many kids as possible, opportunities to learn about and participate in theatre. Through this program, they get to use their imagination, create art, build relationships, gain confidence, the list goes on. My personal participation in theatre has led to lifelong friendships and a deep appreciation for art in so many forms. If you feel passionately about opportunities in the arts for kids, please consider donating to Broadway Bound's fundraiser through this link.

THE BROADWAY BEE is the new and exciting annual competition between the Broadway community. It’s a hilarious adult spelling bee (where cheating is encouraged and drinking is allowed) hosted by Rebecca Feldman and Jay Reiss, the original creators of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
Proceeds will benefit Broadway Bound Kids, a NYC based arts education organization providing performing arts opportunities to under-served students.
At Broadway Bound Kids our mission is to inspire and empower young lives through the arts by creating a nurturing and stress-free environment where kids will gain confidence, make friends, express themselves, and find a place where they feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. All of the proceeds from this event will help support our FREE Saturday program, school based performing arts residencies, community based workshops and camps, master classes with Broadway professionals, full scale musical productions, and trips to see Broadway shows. Your support will help us make sure that all kids have access to these life changing programs regardless of their financial resources. Click HERE for a video about us.
HOW DOES THE BROADWAY BEE WORK?
THE SPELLERS: Ten different Broadway performers have been selected as spellers for each of the ten different teams. These performers will be on stage representing their team/show, spelling words and CHEATING.
THE TEAMS: Each Speller is backed by a team of 10-15 people. The spellers and teams are raising money to purchase cheats, which the Speller will use to win the BROADWAY BEE.
CHEATS: Cheats are like “lifelines” - spellers will purchase cheats with the funds raised by their teams. Cheats include opportunities to ask the audience, look in the dictionary, ask their team, or perform a challenge that the judges choose. Ultimately - all of the funds will go to Broadway Bound Kids to support their free programs and student scholarships.
THE WINNER: Spellers will be eliminated as words are misspelled, and a winner will be crowned. Our winner will take home bragging rights and a one-of-a-kind prize - and invited to defend their crown in 2015.
THE HOSTS: The original creators of Tony Award winning show, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” Rebecca Feldman and Jay Reiss (who also played the Vice Principal) will host and judge the event by using a combination of scripted material and improvisation to lead the spellers through the hilarious competition.
