Broadway Bound Kids wrote -
THE BROADWAY BEE is a new and exciting competition between the Broadway community that will be held annually. It’s a hilarious adult spelling bee, (where cheating is encouraged and drinking is allowed), hosted by Rebecca Feldman and Jay Reiss, the original creators of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
Proceeds will benefit Broadway Bound Kids, a NYC based arts education organization providing performing arts opportunities to under-served students. All donations are tax deductable.
At Broadway Bound Kids our mission is to inspire and empower young lives through the arts by creating a nurturing and stress-free environment where kids will gain confidence, make friends, express themselves, and find a place where they feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. All of the proceeds from this event will help support our FREE Saturday program, school based performing arts residencies, community based workshops, summer programs, master classes with Broadway professionals, full scale musical productions, and trips to see Broadway shows. Your support will help us make sure that all kids have access to these life changing programs regardless of their financial resources. Click HERE for a video about us.
HOW DOES THE BROADWAY BEE WORK?
THE SPELLERS: Ten Broadway performers have been selected as the SPELLERS for each of the ten different teams. These performers will be on stage representing their team/show, spelling words and CHEATING.
THE TEAMS: Each Broadway Speller is supported by a team of 10-15 people. The Spellers and teams are raising money between now and May 9th so that the Broadway Speller can purchase "cheats" to use to win the BROADWAY BEE. Teams are comprised of cast members from the show, friends, family, fans and arts education supporters. ANYONE can join a team but space is limited. Each team member is trying to raise at least $300 each and will recieve a FREE ticket to the BEE. See the bottom of this page for more info on how to join.
CHEATS: Cheats are like “lifelines” - spellers will purchase cheats with the funds raised by their teams. Cheats include opportunities to ask the audience, look in the dictionary, ask their team, or perform a challenge that the judges choose. Ultimately - all of the funds will go to support Broadway Bound Kids.
THE WINNER: Spellers will be eliminated as words are misspelled, and a winner will be crowned. The winner will take home bragging rights, a one-of-a-kind prize, and be invited to defend their crown in 2017.
THE HOSTS: The original creators of the Tony Award winning show, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” Rebecca Feldman and Jay Reiss, (who also played the Vice Principal), will host and judge the event by using a combination of scripted material and improvisation to lead the spellers through the hilarious competition. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO I HAVE TO BE A GOOD SPELLER TO JOIN A TEAM?
Heck NO! Your main role at a team member is to help support the Broadway Speller by helping him/her raise money to buy cheats. You don't have to spell or be in the limelight at all if you don't want to.
DO I HAVE TO BE IN NYC AND/OR ABLE TO COME TO THE SHOW TO BE ON TEAM?
Nope! We'd love to still have your support by helping one of our Spellers cheat! Ultimately all of the proceeds go to Broadway Bound Kids to help support our arts education programs. So you can still help our kids from afar!
WHAT IF I'M A GREAT SPELLER?
Kuddos to you! Join a team and let us know that you're an amazing speller and we'll pass it on to your Broadway Speller. He/She will have the option to purchase a cheat that will allow them to "ask their team." We'll let them know that YOU are the one to ask!
