The Story

EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2017

There are more than 65,000 at-risk students in Denver. At Colorado UpLift, our full-time teachers, mentors and life coaches work to break those cycles of instability, uncertainty, fear and abuse.

Advanced Leadership is our Capstone program, in which exceptional students like Yuki, Shafeeq, Clara and Ivan featured in the video above can earn concurrent high school and college credits after school. Many of our students are the first in their family to graduate high school, let alone go to college.

But the education they get in Advanced Leadership doesn’t end there. The program culminates with a service learning project, where our students travel to Tijuana, Mexico to build 4 houses in 2 days for homeless families. In many cases, these are kids facing extreme poverty in Denver, many of whom have never left Colorado, working to provide homes for families facing even tougher circumstances half a world away. It's a powerful example of what we call "the underserved serving the underserved," and it offers our students a wholly unique opportunity to be the ones offering help — not just the ones receiving it.

It's an experience we’ve seen pay major dividends in terms of perspective and outlook for these students as they come back to home and prepare to graduate. With your help, we can extend this great tradition, shape future leaders and continue to inspire a change in worldviews for students and families both here and abroad.
