BENEFITING: EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
EVENT DATE: May 09, 2015
Thank you for your interest in this fundraiser for the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California. My family and I are grateful for the Foundation's groundbreaking work in support of children with epilepsy, and we are doing what we can to show support and raise awareness. I hope you can do the same on behalf of family, friends and others with epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by seizures resulting in sudden changes in movement, behavior, feeling, and/or awareness. Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, and range in type from absence to grand mal. Brain injury, infection and oxygen deprivation are known causes, but for two thirds of people with the disorder, the specific cause remains unknown. Living with a seizure disorder can be highly disruptive.
Today in the U.S., an estimated 1 in 26 people are believed to have epilepsy, and an additional 150,000 are diagnosed each year (20% under the age of 15). 1 out of 3 patients live with uncontrolled seizures because no effective treatments are available. Many of these patients are children, who can experience up to hundreds of seizures a day and suffer learning disabilities or even death. Unfortunately, perhaps because of the stigma associated with epilepsy, research remains underfunded in comparison to funding for other diseases impacting fewer people.
So why a 1.5 mile swim through the 50 degree waters of SF Bay? The original plan was to stay on land and do a Stroll, but due to a conflict, I had to come up with a Plan B. Since I have been swimming regularly and contemplating a crossing anyway, I figured this would be a good opportunity. I only wish the water was warmer; even in a wet suit it takes a good 10 minutes to warm-up and catch your breath.
Please help me take the plunge in support of the Epilepsy Foundation and its efforts to raise awareness, find a cure, and eliminate the stigma associated with epilepsy. For information about awareness programs in your area, please visit http://www.yourpartnerinepilepsy.com/events.aspx.
Thank you again for your support and I'll be thinking of you on May 9th.
