The goal of the AL DIA Foundation is to address the great need for more and better journalism about the Latino experience in the United States by helping journalism graduates develop careers in the growing Latino news media industry.
Today, with more than 50 million Latinos living in the United States —and few stories in the media about this largest and fastest growing minority group in America — there is an acute need to train young professionals to become the storytellers of our nation’s rapidly changing reality.
Fundraising will provide one-year fellowships for practical training that will enable j-school graduates to produce truly exceptional work. Training will be culturally and linguistically varied, in a multiracial, multiethnic and multilingual newsroom. We will expose them to the most sophisticated multimedia platforms, technology and tools, and teach them the fundamentals of U.S. Latino culture; about the unique demands and complexities of reporting and becoming a competent new storyteller for (and about) this particular community.
By creating this pipeline from school to fellow to journalist, we believe we will be making a substantial contribution to the health and future of our industry. The corps of journalists who emerge from this fellowship experience will have accrued a deep portfolio of work, but more importantly, they will have been asked to excel in dual digital and print newsrooms, and at dual Anglo and Latino conventions, styles and editorial voices. They will be ideally positioned to serve the growing number of news media outlets interested in serving the U.S. Latino market — be they new media, mainstream or ethnic media venues.
In other words, we’ll be cultivating future news media leaders.
In order for us to accomplish this we need to raise money — $250,000 in fellowships during 2014 — to finance the training of graduates from Temple University in Philadelphia; the University of Texas in El Paso, and California State University in Northridge to name a few. For the initial phase of our fundraising goal we would like to raise $50,000 by January 9th.
The AL DIA Foundation supports students developing careers in the media industry by providing scholarship, internships, and fellowships opportunities. The flagship program of the Foundation is the Felix Varela award, a national award recognizing outstanding Journalism on Latino Issues across the United States.
We hope you can help us!
