EVENT DATE: Oct 20, 2013
Some of you know that I'm training to run my first 5k. Two years ago, my (then-13-year-old) son Blaik finished 13.1 miles in the International Half-Marathon in Detroit/Windsor. I cried big proud mama tears, and in my flurry of emotion, promised him I'd run a 5k in recognition of his accomplishment. I haven't made good on it yet, but I'm signed up to run the 5k in the same Detroit Free Press marathon event in which he competed.
I'm also doing the race in connection with Wellspring, a faith-based youth development and tutoring center in northwest Detroit. I work there part-time, but that's not why I'm supporting them. Families in the area are facing so many struggles that I gratefully do not have to face. Their kids are at risk of unthinkable outcomes. In fact, a 12-year-old boy was killed as an innocent bystander of a driveby shooting just last weekend. My son was able to train and complete a half-marathon in the year after he turned twelve. This child will never have that chance. And his mama will cry in a way I can't begin to understand.
Education is the way out, the way up, the only way for these kids. Wellspring wraps educational assistance in the arms of caring adults and ambitious peers. We provide an opportunity usually reserved for the children of well-off families in the form of the Kumon curriculum. Maybe you've heard of Kumon Centers, which identify and fill in skill gaps that would otherwise discourage a child's progress at school. Wellspring is the only place in Michigan providing that service on a non-profit basis and we offer special support to the families we serve.
All that to say: please help me raise money to help fund student achievement, dreams, opportunities and outcomes so much different from the boy playing on his porch last weekend. We can't change the world, but we can show these kids there is another way.
Will you DONATE TODAY to help me lift up these kids who aren't all that different from the ones I kiss goodnight every day? You can donate to me directly and I will pass it along to Wellspring or include my name in the comments of your online donation.
You can learn more about Wellspring by visiting the website: www.WellspringDetroit.org.
For a limited time, your donations will be matched dollar for dollar by a longtime Wellspring supporter who is matching the commitment of our feet with a challenge grant in honor of the race. Will you contribute today?
No donation is too small. Every dollar counts; but right now, every dollar counts twice. Let me know if you have any questions, and know that I'm grateful you took the time to read this. THANK YOU for your support!
