A Lesser Known Educational Opportunity
Organized by: Debby Muskar
Community Education is a term many people don't understand. It refers to classes for community members that do not need college credit. They are typically career and interest-based. Our program, Emeritus at Diablo Valley College offers over 100 classes a year to Senior Citizens in the local area. We have been in business for almost 30 years. We are a fee-based program, meaning we receive no outside funding for our program. As a result, our finances are stretched to the limit to cover the program costs. Frankly, we are in trouble. We could raise our rates to break even, but that goes against our goal to offer affordable classes to fixed-income seniors. The best way to increase our revenue is to get our brochure to the people in the community. In the past, we have kept a mailing list, but that only reaches about 1500 people. We need to reach people who don't currently know about us. Well, that's expensive! The cost of the printing over 50k brochures and then mailing them is far beyond our means. Here is where you come in... If we can raise enough money to pay for this marketing campaign, our program has a chance to continue offering quality classes to the fixed-income Senior Citizens in the community. In the past the brochures cost about $1200 for 2k, with the price per brochure decreasing as the order gets larger. For 50k brochures, we would need approximately $12k. The bulk mailing would cost another $12k as well. That's where we came up with the $20k dollars. We would still pay our share if we can raise enough money to get this effort off the ground. Please, consider donating to the Community Education cause. Help the "Lesser Known" thrive. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you.
