EVENT: 2011 ING New York City Marathon - $1 Mil a Mile

EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011

Alexandra Espinoza

Last year I ran a marathon for the first time in my life, and what a better marathon than the ING NYC Marathon!? Eventhough it was one of the most amazing experiences and accomplishments of my life, I still felt like I could have had an even more fulfilling experience by joining one of the chairties and raise money for a great cause. So I decided to do so this year and support the All As One Charity.

What does All As One do?

ALL AS ONE provides complete care to Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable children at our facility in Freetown.
All As One was established in 1997 as an international charity.  We are a non-governmental organization (NGO) registered in Sierra Leone, whose US office is an IRS 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and whose Dubai office is a nonprofit organization licensed through Dubai International Humanitarian CityOur mission is to respond to the critical dilemma of the orphaned, abandoned, abused and destitute, through the:

ALL AS ONE Children's Center - Providing a safe home and care for orphaned and abandoned children in Sierra Leone.

ALL AS ONE School - Working to meet the educational needs of the children in our care and in the surrounding community.

ALL AS ONE Medical Clinic - Helping to keep Sierra Leonean children and families healthy, by providing preventative intervention and medical treatment.

OUR FIRST PRIORITY is to provide shelter, medical care, schooling, meals, clothing, social interaction and love for the children in our direct legal custody at our Center in Freetown. In addition, both the clinic and the school serve the surrounding community. All As One has reached out to many families over the years, establishing single mothers with their own businesses and temporarily assisting with housing costs, when a family would otherwise be put onto the streets.

Why help All As One?

-  Sierra Leone has the world’s worst infant mortality rate.  Roughly 1 in 4 children die before they reach the age of 5.  More than half of these children will die of preventable causes, such as diarrhea, malnutrition or dehydration.

-  Sierra Leone has the highest childbirth mortality rate in the world.  1800 in 100,000 women die during childbirth, compared to 8 in 100,000 in the US.

-  Approximately 64% of Sierra Leoneans do not have access to medical care.

-  Sierra Leone is ranked last out of 177 countries evaluated by the United Nations, in an index comparing poverty, life expectancy, literacy, education, and other factors.

The war and subsequent return of refugees has put an enormous economic strain on the country.  There are no government-funded child welfare programs in Sierra Leone, making the need for organizations such as All As One even greater.

Without All As One, these children would likely be living on the streets.
