BENEFITING: Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Aug 12, 2017
Dolphins have been my favourite animal for as long as I can remember. I had about 15 dolphin stuffed animals as a kid as well as notebooks, t shirts, bracelets, you name it. I drew countless drawings, put up pictures all over my room and read every fact I could find. Dolphins sleep by having one hemisphere of their brain active at a time, fun fact. They have self awareness and relate to the suffering of members of their social circle. This happens especially in situations like in Taiji, Wakamaya in Japan where hundreds of dolphins are corralled into "The Cove" to be killed or captured and put into captivity. This happens every year from September to March, where an approximate 22,000 dolphins are killed annually. I am against any kind of cruelty, but upon hearing of this years ago and seeing the images and videos it broke my heart to see the animal I've adored my whole life slaughtered and taken from its home. On August 12th I am swimming to raise money for Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project (https://dolphinproject.net/), an organization dedicated to stopping the killing of dolphins. I will be swimming 1500 m as part of their virtual race (https://dolphinproject.net/blog/post/tread-for-taiji-2017-virtual-race/#!prettyphoto/0/) in the lake at my cottage in the hopes of raising awareness and funds to support the Dolphin Project and its efforts. Thank you in advance for your support!
