Alex was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 1st May 2014 . She has a painful cancerous tumor about the size of a golf-ball. Thankfully, this type of cancer is highly treatable, and baring complications she should be fine within a matter of months.
Alex is feeling shocked and understandably upset but is being positive and working toward preparing for her performance commitments this summer. There are some risks for her beautiful singing voice, but she took care in finding a good surgeon who is confident she (the surgeon) can do this procedure without damaging Alexandra's voice.
Alex is a very hard worker, but is having to reorient herself because she will not be able to work during her recovery. As a self-employed opera singer and voice teacher, she has achieved independence though a combination of jobs that offer no paid-time off, sick leave or temporary disability. Catastrophic illness also has a way of draining savings and extended family resources quickly, so financial help would be very appreciated by her.
As for treatment, Alex has to have a full thyroidectomy, as well as have some lymph nodes removed. She is also going to have radiation treatment, which is given orally and shouldn't be as hard on her body as other types of radiation (she won't lose her hair or a bunch of weight).
Alex will need to have life-long thyroid replacement therapy. The whole recovery process should be about two months (fingers-crossed).
All the support, blessings and love Alex has been receiving from friends and family is deeply appreciated. It feels for many of us as though this path that Alexandra is having to walk has put us all on a journey we had not expected or wanted but must find ways to grapple with and learn from.
Prayers are very welcome.
