Dear friends and family,
I am asking for your support as I take on my first marathon next month in NYC. In addition to raising my level of adrenaline, endorphins, aches and pains, I am raising money in support of the Herzl Camp Scholarship Fund. Every mile I run and every dollar I raise will go to benefit kids who otherwise may not be able to afford the experience to attend a camp that has given me, my friends and family so many summers of irreplaceable joy, self-growth and connection to our community.
I would appreciate any level of support for which you feel comfortable. No donation is too small.
A little background on why I am running the marathon. Let’s be real, I never had any desire to run a marathon. It actually sounded awful. But something overwhelmed me last year to change my mind when watching the NYC marathon from my neighborhood in Brooklyn. The streets were lined with neighbors who’ve never met, they’re cheering on the strangers running by with awing enthusiasm, local bands were set up every few blocks volunteering to play for hours non-stop, and so on. It blew me away to witness my crazy, disjointed, and often lonely city of millions transform into one united community. And it struck me enough that I entered my name into the lottery for an entry the following year… and here we are!
I’m excited to run this race not only for myself, but for another community I hold so close to my heart – the Herzl community. I think about the summers I spent as a camper and staff member and am reminded how greatly they have enriched my life and taught me lessons that I still draw from today. And because of this, it only feels natural to run this race knowing that every step I take and every dollar I raise will help to give someone in my community those same experiences I consider invaluable.
On the morning of November 1st I’ll lace up my sneakers and run 26.2 miles through all five NYC boroughs alongside 50,000 marathoners from all over the world, I will know you are running alongside me for a great cause and together we can send more deserving kids to summer camp.
So, thank you endlessly for your support and kind donations (and also reading my sappy emotion-fest of a fundraiser description). You bet it’s going to push me past that finish line next month and make this accomplishment all the sweeter!
