THE STORY:

On February 14, I'll be running the LA Marathon and raising money for Sojourn, an organization that is very important to me.  Since 1977, Sojourn has been providing services to families affected by domestic violence. In addition to providing an immediate safe space for victims to live, Sojourn also helps clients rebuild their lives.

Over the last year, I've had the pleasure of volunteering here once a week with some of the most kind and generous people I've ever met. Specifically, I work in the children's play group, which focuses on giving kids a safe space to play, while also empowering them to express themselves in a non-violent way. For children that have gone through severe abuse, this can be challenging, but the growth I've seen with kids here is moving.

Story time! The play group was a relatively small one, with just me and two brothers: Kyle (age 13) and Jason (age 5). This family had been living at the shelter for about four months. Group was over and I was finishing putting everything away, while Kyle and Jason wrapped up their game. Jason was falling asleep, so Kyle, ever the caring older brother, announced he was taking Jason inside to go to bed. As he left he turned to me and asked, "hey man - you gonna be all right alone if I leave?"

I like this story because it shows the love and kindness these kids have and learn to express through Sojourn's programs, even after going through some really hard times.  Coming from a place where violence was always a threat, Kyle wanted to make sure I would be safe alone.

So let's raise some money for a really great organization. All funds raised will go directly to Sojourn and will be used for toys, food, and other costs associated with maintaining two live-in shelters.

And to make things interesting, I'm planning on matching donations, based on how the race goes. So please donate, and root!

Totally fail - final time over 3:24:02 (match 10%)

New PR - final time under 3:24:02 (match 20%)
