Dear Friends and Family,
Education is the key for advancing oneself in life, but in many parts of the world it is not readily available. This is especially a problem for women and girls in Kenya. If schooling can only be provided to certain members of the family, the boys will almost always be chosen. As a response to this, Daraja Academy opened its doors. Daraja is an all girls school in Kenya which offers an excellent high school education to girls who would not normally be given the opportunity to learn. Through the education that Daraja provides, these girls can move on the have better lives and improve their community and the world.
When we learned of Daraja, we were instantly interested. We have been involved in a couple fundraising efforts before, but our current mission is to raise money for this amazing school by running the San Francisco Bay to Breakers race for Daraja. As a mother-daughter team, we hope that we can do our part to help give these girls the futures they deserve! Our race is on May 20, 2012, and by that date we hope to have enough sponsorships to really make a difference.
For this race, we were partnered with a student at Daraja Academy named Hadija Hussein Abullahi. Hadija is 17 years old and a 12th grader. She hails from Isiolo, a town in northern country which is one of the most destitute in the country. More than 80% of the population rely on food relief because droughts prevent the growth of crops. Hadija, an orphan, did not have the financial means to go to secondary school, and it seemed that she would be left without opportunities. However, she was provided a four-year scholarship to Daraja, and through her education she is working to better her life. We are excited to be matched with such an amazing girl! We hope that you can help us on our mission to support her and her fellow classmates in Kenya!
