I've been active in many different sports my whole life. Running has never been a sport I've committed to. Over the last 11 years, I have participated in 9 seasons of women's tackle football. For the last 3 years I have been a part of the Boston Militia football team in which we only lost 2 games and brought home 2 world championships. At the end of the 2012 season (July), I decided to end my football career on a high note and go back to school part time. Even though I'm finding challenges with balancing school, work and life, ending my football career immediately created a void, I was still in need of an athletic challenge.
I am fortunate to work for John Hancock who is a large sponsor of the Boston Marathon; they have given me the opportunity to take on a new challenge. I have never run as a sport and honestly never loved it, which sounds crazy because I signed up to run the Boston Marathon in 2013...26.2 miles...26.2 miles...26.2 miles!!! Yes, still in shock. I'm an athlete but this is a whole new world I'm not at all used to. Completing the Boston Marathon in April will be one of the biggest challenges in my life to date. My goal is when I am at my peak of exhaustion, I am able to persevere mentally and physically and complete the 26.2 miles. During the training, I also hope to drop to a healthier weight and transform my body. With football, I had to maintain a certain weight for my position, which has prohibited me to set a weight loss goal until now. All of these things are nothing but positive life changes.
Besides my own personal goals, there is a bigger reason as to why I’m running, our youth. John Hancock has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Boston and the Ron Burton Training Village in which all money raised will be donated and split equally amongst both charities. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the kids who are a part of the Ron Burton Training Village; their stories were inspiring, they personally explained to me how the Training Village shaped their lives. This is why I WILL run and I WILL do whatever I can to raise as much money as I can for their organization. Please look at the websites below if you want to see more information on both charities.
What I do know for sure, I am READY for this new challenge!!! I hope you all have the opportunity to support me in this run; whether it’s donating to the children of these awesome charities, sending supportive messages or cheering me on from the sideline, anything would be appreciative.
