BENEFITING: Saha Global
Hello Everyone! My name is Ali Almullaali and I am a student at Bradley University majoring in Industrial Engineering and concentrating on Systems. I have recently accepted a fellowship with Saha Global, a non-profit organization that empowers women in rural communities to solve their village’s need for clean water and electricity resources, two basic human rights.
For three weeks, December 28, 2015 to January 18, 2016, I will be working in a village, with other field representatives and entrepreneurs, located in the northern region of Ghana, Africa. We will be training community-appointed women to build and run a solar-powered charging center to meet the need of sufficient electricity. Once the solar charging center is in place, the electricity business is own and operated by the women business owners.
What are the main problems?
First of all, while most of us are taking electricity and power for granted, only 10% of villages in the northern region of Ghana have access to sufficient power. Second of all, until this point, many communities in the northern region of Ghana depend on kerosene lamps or battery-operated flashlights for light. Imagine that, according to James Melik, a reporter from the BBC news, “the World Bank estimates that breathing kerosene is the equivalent of smoking two packets of cigarettes a day”. This could lead to many health hazards that people living in these communities are not aware of. Third of all, people in the northern region of Ghana travel for hours to charge their electronics.
How will your donation help?
100% of the donations will go towards solar equipment required to build and maintain the project. 100-Watt solar panels connecting to a Burro Genset, which houses a charge controller, 1200 Watt battery and 600 Watt inverter. We will also be providing lanterns to each household, which uses the rechargeable batteries from the new solar business. To date, Saha global has launched 78 clean water businesses and 15 solar electricity businesses. 100% are still in operation today. Let us increase these numbers together. All of the revenue from the electricity business stays in the community and is managed by the women entrepreneurs.
