My Second Annual Tour de Cure Ride
This year, I won't be riding alone; I'll be accompanied by The Assistant. He wants to join me in helping to raise money to find better treatments -- and maybe even cures -- for diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease, meaning that my four friends who have been diagnosed with it will struggle with it for the rest of their lives. In T1D, the body produces no insulin, and must be injected using syringes or an insulin pump.
What does insulin do? Your body breaks down the sugars and starches you eat into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. But without insulin, the body can't get that glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. When your blood sugar is too high or too low, not only do you feel awful, but your body isn't getting what it needs to survive.
As I've watched my friends struggle with this, I realize that there must be a better way. I'm hoping that by raising money for research and treatments, we'll be able to find a cure.
I can't do this alone. I need your help. Can you please contribute to my fundraising efforts?
