Okay, if you know me, you know my job at, Macomb Literacy Partners, is a really big part of my life. Every day, I meet extraordinary people; people whose life stories make me cry and at the same time fill me with hope. Here are a few of them:
Willie is now an elderly man who originally came from the South. He didn't learn to read because his family needed him to help support the family by picking cotton.
Jim was abused as a child. His family moved around a lot and most of the time his father didn't even bother to register him for school.
Mary had a mom who abused drugs while she was pregnant with Mary and throughout Mary's childhood. Mary has several learning disabilities.
Mike is a refugee. He need to learn to speak English and was illiterate in his native language in addition to being blind. In his native country, people with a disability like blindness are hidden away and not given a chance to learn or develop to their full potential.
Lenora used to be a legal secretary. She had a stroke and now she needs to learn how to read and write again.
Martin learned to read his street sign for the very first time at 70 years old. Sometimes, illiterate people are so ashamed they hide in the shadows for years. The first time I met Martin, he had tears in his eyes when he said to me “I’m different, you’ve never met anyone like me”.
The generous and compassionate volunteers who give their time to help people like Willie, Jim, Mary, Mike, Lenora and Martin are an inspiration.
Macomb Literacy Partners is a small non-profit but the work we do is vital. There’s no way we can do this work without private donations from people like you. Your donation says in Macomb County and will go toward training volunteer tutors, buying learning materials, and running a small office. Your donation will not go toward rent, utilities, accounting services, tax preparation, renting classrooms, renting computer labs or coffee. Thankfully, all of these things are donated to MLP!
If you know someone who needs MLP's service please help them with the information at this link: https://www.macombliteracy.org/students/
