BENEFITING: PROJECT PURPLE
I stumbled upon Project Purple a little over a year ago. I had been running random races for 4 years and I was looking to do something crazy---run 13 half marathons in 13 months. I googled 13 in 13, and lo and behold found Project Purple, a grassroots organization raising funds to fight pancreatic cancer, through running.
My brother in law, Stephen Price, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December, 1994. He passed away within six months of his diagnosis, at age 34. He would have turned 52 earlier this month. I would have loved for him to be here to celebrate his little brother’s (my husband’s) 50th birthday, to meet his niece and three nephews, and….well, just to be here. I decided that if, in fact, I did pursue this running idea, Project Purple would be a part of it.
Fast forward a full year. I was sidetracked by running my first full marathon, the Marine Corps in October of 2012. Arriving at the ½ way point of the race, I re-dedicated myself to running half marathons (read: full= never again)….and to my 13 x 13 x 13 idea.
- To finish 13 half marathons during the calendar year of 2013.
- To raise funds for Project Purple and grant a portion in Stephen’s name.
- To encourage at least 5 people to run a half marathon with me that haven’t yet completed that distance.
I hope that you join me in my efforts, by donating to Project Purple via my Crowdrise site, by joining me in a race, and by encouraging my efforts along the way.
