THE STORY:

My very special mother had quite the path to walk during her time on earth. She was a daughter, sister, wife, and devoted mother when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 43 in 2001. While our entire family was shaken, she persisted through relentless surgeries, chemo/radiation therapy, and reconstructive surgery. Once the treatments were completed and she entered remission, I never thought about her ever getting sick again. Sophmore year of college changed that, as she and my father both had cancer recurrences- both with very poor outlooks. From 2009 until her death last fall, she put herself through every treatment imaginable in order to gain as much time with us as possible. Memories were made on road trips to the cancer center, in waiting rooms, and in hospitals.

Anyone who knew my mom knew that she and I shared many hyper-passionate views about how to make the world a better place. She collaborated with me on numerous American Cancer Society fundraisers, attended several Relay for Life events, and was the first person I called after each Donna event I ran. She couldn't understand running so many miles in one day, but she 100% understood why I did it- because there are too many people in this great community who are struggling, and this is my way of helping. Whenever I finished a Donna race, I would come by the house afterwards (she was unable to be at the finish line, as she was usually undergoing treatment the weekends of events). I would put my finisher medal on her, and she would just stare at it and smile.

I was unable to train or even think of running in the 2017 event following the loss of my mother in 2016. It has been almost a year since we lost her, and I need to get back to the good works she would want me to do. She would want me to fundraise my little heart out, get my body back into shape, and cross the finish line like I have done so many times before. The 2018 event will be my 6th Donna event- to date I have run 1 marathon, 3 half marathons, and 1 5K with this amazing non-profit. Why the Donna? Because 12% of women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer. Because treatment costs can range from $10,000-$150,000. Because this organization takes 100% of the profits from these events, and throws it right back into OUR community. Research. Case management. Counseling. Financial aid for patients. I can't think of a better cause to honor my mother's life with, and I'm asking you to contribute. Thank you.
