I will be joining a team of 150 strong on May 20th for the Annual Bay to Breakers race and partnering with the 104 Girls of Daraja in Kenya to raise money to support the new class of 2012. I am convinced that these girls will change lives -- their own as well as those of their communities and their country. I will be partnering with a wonderful girl named Naomi.
Please consider making a contribution to support these wonderful girls -- your gift will provide access to education for an exceptional and promising young woman who has no other way to get it...join us and make a difference to someone special! PLEASE Check out our video and see what makes Daraja so special!
“If I was not at Daraja, I would have repeated primary school,” Naomi said. “Some people encouraged me to get married, but I didn’t want to. It was better if I commit suicide or taken as a slave than to be married.” Naomi hasn’t had an easy childhood. The first born of 5 children, she took it especially hard when one of her younger sisters passed away a couple years ago. Born to extremely poor parents, Naomi and her siblings were taken care of by her grandmother, who was able to receive government assistance until her passing.
“When I grow up, I would like to be a doctor,” Naomi said. “Not just any doctor, but a well trained doctor for the purpose of treating the poorest sick people in Kenya and other countries.” Naomi says she loves being a Daraja girl, especially the way all the girls cooperate with each other, exchange ideas and respect their teachers. Although she’s had a difficult past, it has encouraged her to work extremely hard to change her future.
Thank you! Educated Girls will Change the World!
