BENEFITING: Turning Point Brooklyn
You know how good it feels, after a long hard day of work or play, to step under a hot shower and wash away the grit and aches of the day. Now imagine how you'd feel after a night of sleeping under a bridge, in a filthy alley, or a hidden corner under the streets of New York. What would it do for your body, mind, and soul to have the simple gift of a shower after such a night?
Turning Point Brooklyn knows that restoring a bit of human dignity to the most marginalized members of our society—homeless men and women—begins with small steps. A daily shower can be an extraordinary gift to such a person, and is often the first step that leads to hope and healing.
Thanks to Zootly, a technology company that is not only transforming the moving and logistics industry, but is making a world of difference in the neighborhoods it serves through its philanthropic campaigns, Turning Point Brooklyn now has a new van for our Mobile Outreach programs. We now need to retrofit the van to take our Shower Project on the road. Turning Point Brooklyn has been operating the "We Care" Shower Project at our Sunset Park facilities since 2009, where homeless and inadequately housed individuals can drop in for a daily shower, and more. They get a bar of soap, shampoo, shaving kits for men, a clean towel, a new pair of socks and underwear, and access to the laundry room where they can wash and dry their clothing. Many stay a while longer to enjoy a simple snack, a cup of coffee, and a clean and welcoming place to sit and rest for a while, to watch TV, or simply enjoy the conversation of fellow visitors.
The Shower Project is a vital gateway to other Turning Point services, including drug and alcohol treatment, basic medical and mental health care, HIV prevention services, supportive housing options, adult basic education, and job-readiness training. Last year, the Shower Project served more than 3,000 homeless men and women of all ages, from disenfranchised youth and young adults, to seniors and every group in between. Help us reach more New Yorkers in need, people who, like you and me, know the healing and restorative power of a simple shower.
