Derek Stack wrote -My friend Matt Sayles passed away on November 10, 2011 after a long difficult battle against salivary duct carcinoma. His friendship was never limited by borders and will endure over time. One of Matt's most admirable gifts was his ability to reach out, connect, and find common ground with anyone he met. Matt was a son, a brother, a teacher, a friend, a lover, and an avid fan of music and sports. This fundraiser is a tribute to Matt and an effort to raise awareness of a rare form of cancer.
Salivary gland cancer is a rare form of cancer that begins in the salivary glands of the body. There is no known cause for the cancer, and there is currently no ribbon for salivary gland cancer, as less than 1% of all cancers attack the salivary glands. Because the cause isn’t completely known, the risks are not widely recognized and the symptoms often go unnoticed. We strive to help break the silence about the potential danger that is affecting thousands of people and increase the information available to the everyday person who may not even know that salivary cancer exists.
