BENEFITING: Robin Hood
Why I chose to support the Robin Hood Foundation: First off, I chose to support these specific charitable organizations because they are both extremely efficient and very capable of having an impact. Both charities are extremely highly rated for efficiency, meaning that quite nearly every dollar donated to the cause will go the stated mission, and the organizations have high levels of transparency. This organization is committed to treating the underlying causes of poverty in New York City. This group was started by wealthy businesspeople who pay for all administrative costs with their own money, so that a higher proportion of donations could go directly to the cause. It then allots these funds to hyper-local community groups to do a vast variety of things, from providing quality educational programs in troubled neighborhoods to providing counselling and support to people with behavioral issues to facilitating a path to higher education for young adults to helping communities recover from Hurricane Sandy. The full list of community organizations that the Robin Hood Foundation contributes to and its methodology for selecting them can be found at https://www.robinhood.org/programs. I felt that it was appropriate to choose a local poverty-fighting organization because it helps solve a problem that I can actually witness, with New York City just a short train ride away. I especially like that the Robin Hood Foundation caters to underprivileged children. These kids have difficult lives early on by no fault of their own. Being a young adult myself, I believe that all children should be entitled to the quality educational opportunities that would allow them to advance in the world. I think that all kids deserve a fighting chance at a successful future, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to help make that happen. However, access to education is just one part of the solution, and the Robin Hood Foundation supports the large variety of other solutions required to effectively fight poverty in NYC. If you would like to donate to support my goals, but are unsure if you want to support this particular charity, consider the other charity I am simultaneously raising money for, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. I will be running my first marathon on August 25, 2015, around Rockland Lake in Congers, New York. The event I am running at is called the Self-Transcendence Marathon.
