A Place to Call Home – A Non-Profit French Language School in Metro Indianapolis

In early summer of 2015, a small group of volunteers began evaluating the possibility of an adult French language program to serve Indianapolis metro community. Four months later, what appeared at first as an impossible mission, became reality. On October 21st, 2015, Alliance Française launched two French classes for adults, with a total of seventeen students enrolled.

We are now a non-profit French language school on a mission to bring the language and culture of France to Indiana. We provide French language courses, cooking classes, and cultural activities for kids and adults. We also host social groups for French-speaking locals in need of fellowship and support and we are developing an internship program for college students in need of work experience and skills related to their field of study such as marketing and grant writing.

Our little plan to bring French culture to metro Indianapolis has become a true organization with big dreams. We are constantly looking for new ways to culturally connect Hoosiers and their kids to French speaking families living the Indy metro area, but to achieve our goals we must establish a permanent facilities for our classes and activities (we currently hold our classes in a rented space). With a place for Alliance Française d'Indianapolis to call home we will have the ability to enhance our current programs and try and begin to develop new ones such as:

  • French Child Care Center: Where French-speaking children living in central Indiana can speak their native language and socialize with others who share their cultural interests.
  • ESL Program: With the establishment of a permanent facilities, we will have the ability to create a program that can help local French-speaking people become more proficient in the English language enabling them to be happier, more productive members of society.
  • French Language Teacher Training Program: The U.S. is lagging far behind other countries when it comes to multilinguistic abilities. We want to do our part by creating a training program for elementary and secondary French language teachers who can pass that education on to the next generation.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and for your gracious donation!
