“Why should we pay an outside contractor to mow our lawn – when we can just pay ourselves to do it?”
This simple question sparked the creation of ADP's most successful Community Economy innovation to date: United for Hire.
Alliance to Develop Power is a community based organization of more than 1,000 families in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. We elevate new leaders to build strong healthy neighborhoods in the most distressed communities in our region. Be sure to check out the video story of Adrian Garcia in the image feed to the left.
ADP has been buiding a grassroots “Community Economy” that creates living wage jobs, and economic power in the communities that need it most. This started 21 years ago when tenants liivng in affordabe housing organized to keep it from going to market rate. Today, 770 of these units are still maintained as ADP tenant-run housing.
United for Hire, an ADP Community Economy innovation, was formed ten years ago out of this same community of tenants. When running our own neighborhoods, tenants were able to make decisions that improved their own lives substantially.
The model we came up with is replicable - it can be scaled to fit any affordable housing property. There are more than 1 million famiies living in affordable housing nationally.
United for Hire is a worker controlled / community owned business, employing over 20 people in living wage jobs – while providing landscaping, snow removal, painting, tiling and construction to affordable housing projects. ADP’s base of assets injects more than $20 million a year into the regional economy. Replication of this model could bring this number up to a quarter of a billion in wages and benefits in other regions by 2014.
