Two-thirds of the achievement gap between low and high-income students can be attributed to unequal access to summer learning opportunities. While their higher income peers post gains, low-income students show losses during the summer -- and struggle to catch up during the year.
Breakthrough Collaborative breaks this cycle. By providing summer and school-year tuition-free programs to low-income and traditionally underserved middle and high school students, Breakthrough is closing the achievement gap in Greater Boston and across the country. The results speak for themselves. In last three years, 100% of Breakthrough Greater Boston seniors matriculated to four-year colleges compared to 34 percent of their low-income peers nationwide.
Not only does Breakthrough change students' lives, but it helps to recruit and train future teachers as well. Breakthrough recruits college students and provides them with top-notch mentors, training, and support, and helps them design and teach their own six-week classes. In my class, student studied how politics and the Olympics intertwined -- learning about everything from Athenean representation to the civil rights movement through the Black Power salute to how communism affected the '84 Olympic boycott.
Breakthrough has transformed thousands of students' lives, including mine. That's why when I run the Boston Marathon this April, I'm running to support Breakthrough Greater Boston. I hope you will consider supporting the amazing students at Breakthrough as I run through their city!
Thanks in advance for your consideration,
