On May 15th, I will be supporting Daraja Academy in the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco while the Daraja Academy students will be partaking in the Daraja version of Bay to Breakers on their campus in Kenya called the "Lap-A-Thon."
I have been partnered with Daraja student Mary Ndoro, a Form 1 student. Mary is 18 years old, one of the oldest Form 1 students. Mary sat for the 8th grade exam three years in a row, each time hoping that her family would have enough money to send her to school. Unfortunately, her father is too old to work and her mother, who is a business lady, doesn't make enough to send her to school. In comes Daraja, which of course means bridge in Swahili, to help Mary cross the bridge to the education she wanted and deserved so badly. Mary wants to be a nurse and I know that with her determination and hard work, she will make it happen. I can't wait to run for Mary and all of the other girls at Daraja Academy in Kenya.
