BENEFITING: SUNNYSIDE DISTRICT MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 15, 2012
Hurricane Sandy devastated New York and there are many worthy and pressing causes to support. In our neighborhood of Sunnyside, Queens - the sign for Alpha Donuts split in half and shattered. We're going to get them a new one.
I've lived in Sunnyside off and on since 2002. Our neighborhood is a gem and an incredible place to live. One of my favorite neighborhood landmarks is Alpha Donuts, with its bright yellow and red sign, greeting all who arrive at the 46th/Bliss Street stop on the #7 train. With its low counter and fresh coffee, Alpha Donuts has been a neighborhood all-night hangout for decades.
I don't know what the insurance situation is - but I imagine many of us hope that a replacement sign can be created - to retain the spirit and look of the original. If everyone just chips in a few bucks, we can get the awnings of Queens Boulevard looking like new in no time and, the BID can use its discretion with any additional funds to help modernize other storefront areas.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of the hurricane, I have not heard back from the Sunnyside BID as of yet - but I have a call into them and my goal is to raise funds through this page and donate them directly to the BID. As I really don't have a clue what a large sign like that costs, my hope is that any overages will be given directly to other local merchants who are facing hardships because of Hurricane Sandy. If they are unable to participate, I will go directly to merchants myself, and provide an account of what was donated where.
