BENEFITING: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
ORGANIZER: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
On November 5th, I'll be running the NYC Marathon for Team ALS in honor of John Barton, who has suffered from the effects of ALS for almost two years. Seeing the devastating impact that this cruel disease has had on John's body as well as his family and loved ones, including my Mom Betty, has inspired me to help out in any way I can.
ALS gradually incapacitates the body's neuromuscular system, which enables the brain to send signals to the muscles. Rendering the muscles useless, small tasks such as breathing, walking, and talking quickly become very challenging. Through it all, the body's ability to think and feel are rarely affected, essentially imprisoning the mind within the body. Though awareness has been raised by Yankees' legend Lou Gehrig and more recently with the Ice Bucket Challenge, ALS research and treatment has made significant progress over the years but has a long way to go. All donation proceeds will fund cutting-edge research as well medical care and supportive services for local (greater NY area) ALS patients.
This will be my first full marathon and I am honored to run it with Team ALS for John. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference! Let's find a cure!
