BENEFITING: The ALS Association Western Pennsylvania Chapter
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
This will be my second year raising funds to help support the fight against ALS. I'm thankful that I have another opportunity to run for this cause and encourage others to contribute towards the defeat of ALS!!
Why this is cause so important to me?
My dad, Bruce, had ALS for four years before passing away on October 30th, 2009. He was 52. He was the greatest man I have ever known and I remember him everyday for his great strenght and giant heart. Watching the man that used to carry and toss me in the air struggle to even stand or breathe was a huge test of my inner strength and positive spirit. However, it enlightened me to enjoy life and run becuase I can, and because my father always loved to watch me and cheer me on during cross country and track meets. He will forever be greatly missed. My only prayer is that more research will be invested into ALS so that one day there may be a treatment and cure so that other families do not have to experience what we, and other families affected by ALS, go through.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. This is an ugly and awful disease with currently no cure and no medical treatment.
More about The ALS Western Pennsylvania Chapter: It was founded in 1982 to serve the needs of those living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers. Our Chapter provides services and support to persons living with ALS, caregivers, families, and healthcare providers in 31 counties in central and western Pennsylvania.
The ALS Western Pennsylvania Chapter has been involved with the Pittsburgh Marathon since 2014. This year we are a Silver Level Charity Sponsor. Our goal is to raise $20,000 that will be used for patient care and services in the 31 counties we serve. Help us reach our goal by donating today.
