Over 112 million unmarried people in this country face discrimination and unfair treatment every day. Marriage is on the decline and divorce rates are rising, yet federal legislation mentions marriage over 1,300 times. We do not believe that benefits and privileges should be assigned on the basis of marital status, and marriage should not be viewed as the only legitimate outcome for a committed relationship. Single people, and all forms of relationships deserve equal respect and equal rights. Unmarried Equality is fighting to end discrimination on the basis of marital status.
