Welcome to the 2015 Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer Home Run Derby at Metro Bank Park for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition! We're so excited you have chosen to step up to the plate with us Tuesday, June 9 at Metro Bank Park, the home of the Harrisburg Senators.
This will be our teams 3rd year participating in "Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer." Last year we were once again Top Fundraisers! Last year we raised $3,633!!! Thank you to Brent, Dan, Josh, Mom, and Tom for the awesome fundraising! Thank you again to all our donors. Our goal is to be the highest fundraisers again this year and of course with the largest cheering section. Our cheering section is amazing and continues to grow each year.
This fundraiser is a way to honor my mother and all those who are fighting and have fought Breast Cancer. This October 2015 will be 3 years since my mom, Kathie, was diagnosed with Stage IV Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast. Everyday continues to be a blessing.
Kathie's Story: A few years ago my mom was having a surgery unrelated to her diagnosis and the surgeon told us they found breast cancer cells in another part of her body. She was someone that went for her mammograms yearly without any issues and doctors never felt any masses or lumps. When we heard this news we were confused and devastated.
My mom has dense breasts and what we didn't know is that sometimes with dense breasts, abnormalities can't be picked up with mammograms alone. We learned from this and continue to spread the word about dense breasts and what it really means. In 2013 a bill was passed making it mandatory to alert those who have dense breasts so they can have a discussion with their physicians.
Today thanks to modern medicine they have made it possible to live longer with some kinds of stage IV breast cancer. Looking at my mom you wouldn't know she lives with this horrible disease. My mom continues to endure radiation to her bones, shots monthly for the rest of her life, needle sticks for blood work, and takes a pill daily to hopefully keep the cancer from spreading anymore than it already has. Unfortunately, we face the reality that there is no cure for my mom's cancer but she continues to live each day to the fullest.
My mother is a true hero and inspiration because through the surgery, the diagnosis, the treatment, she has been so positive and keeps a strong faith. My mom tells me I do all the worrying for her. She has a great group of friends and supporters through her journey and without all of you I don't where we would be.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the thoughts and prayers, the wonderful care from the doctors and nurses at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, the generous donors to help those affected in Pennsylvania by this awful disease, and of course the P.A. Breast Coalition for their continued support. I am hopeful that one day soon they will find a cure. ~Alyson Yost
