EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
A little over a year ago I decided that I wanted to volunteer so I researched several volunteering opportunities around the Boston area. One that stuck out to me was working with isolated elders. I thought it would be nice to get a closer look on how the other side of life is because I work with children (I also have a great relationship with my grandparents).
I volunteer with FrienshipWorks and meet weekly with an isolated/immobile elder, Israel, to catch up and play backgammon. We took our game out on the road a few times - played backgammon in the North End while we munched on sweets and had lunch at the local tavern. I have also done short-term requests where I have assisted a blind man in running errands and helped an elder with Alzheimer’s in getting groceries.
These experiences have certainly touched my heart in so many ways. I have grown to be more compassionate and mindful of elder's adversities. I also find joy in learning about their cherished past-times.
Please help in supporting this cause!
Walk with us and embrace the power of Friendship!
10:00 am - 3:00 pm
FriendshipWalks is our first Annual Walk-a-Thon! It will raise awareness of the power of friendship in ending elder isolation and raise critical funds to support our programs. FriendshipWorks’ programs aim to reduce isolation and provide friendly support and assistance to the elders we serve, including one-on-one friendly visits, medical escorts, and friendly pet visits.
Walk with a friend or meet a new friend, form a team, bring your match. Honor a friendship or an elder in your life, or walk in memory of someone important to you. Choose a route; collect pledges; then bring your pet, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family, and join us on May 15th!
FriendshipWalks will promote the importance of building neighborly connections, the value of friendship, and the role of walking and physical activities in the health and well-being of elders.
