I am excited to be walking for a cure for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis! I am hoping that you will consider making a contribution of any amount. The money I raise through the "Walk to Cure Psoriasis" will go directly to "Alyssa's Fund" with the goal of raising $1 million for research for a cure. We are almost halfway there!! My hope is that this fund will help the nearly 700 girls, boys and adults are diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis EVERY DAY.
This is not just a skin disease...
I remember the day I was diagnosed with psoriasis. It was the summer before 7th grade and I found tiny, red itch patches on my elbows and knees. My doctor told me I had psoriasis and gave me some cream and sent me home. We didn't think much about it. Pretty soon, I was covered with psoriasis over 50% of my body. Many of my peers thought my condition was contagious and were afraid of contracting it, so they avoided me. I tried to hide it and started to withdraw from the people around me.
The lesions kept aggressively appearing all over my body and the burning and itching was unbearable. It became difficult for me to concentrate and attend school. Then it event got worse. The psoriasis traveled to my joints and I developed psoriatic arthritis. I had to give up soccer and other activities because of the severe pain. I have since learned that psoriasis puts me at risk for other diseases like heart disease, diabetes and Crohn's disease.
Today, I am not afraid to let people know about my psoriasis anymore thanks to support from my family, friends and people like you. Where I used to hide and withdraw from people, I now share my story nationally to help others and to bring awareness. A fund has been created in my name called: "Alyssa's Fund" with a goal of raising $1 million for research--especially to study the role that the immune system plays in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis which could ultimately lead to a cure.
Together, I am confident that WE CAN find a cure for the 7.5 million Americans that have psoriasis.
You can truly help make a difference in the lives of people who have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis by supporting me in the "Walk to Cure Psoriasis" event in Dallas, Texas, on November 3, 2012. All monies that I raise benefit the National Psoriasis Foundation’s “Alyssa’s Fund” which is a fund in my name that supports research for a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
