Hello Family & Friends –
I feel truly blessed to be given the chance to run in the 2015 Boston Marathon. As some of you know, I ran my first marathon in September 2013. I ended up exceeding my expectations and finished with a time of 3:34:21. It was shortly after I finished, lying in bed and barely able to walk, that I learned I needed a qualifying time of 3:40 or faster to apply to the next Boston Marathon. In September of last year, I applied and was accepted. I knew right away that I wanted to use this opportunity as a way to help others.
I am dedicating this race to my grandmother, Betty. My grandmother has been someone who has always given me unconditional love and support. My warmest memories as a child come from being with her. She always supported me through the years with sports & school, knew all my friends, and always took the time to come visit me no matter how far away I lived. I appreciated her even more after I had kids myself. It was a different generation, and I am amazed at how she raised six kids with none of the amenities and support we have today. I find strength on many days just thinking about her and how she did it. She is often on my mind during my long runs when I have nothing but time to think. I have been given great opportunities in my life, and I want to live life to the fullest for myself, my daughters, and for her. She has been slowly declining over the last few years with memory loss and dementia, and it can be tough at times. Even though she doesn’t always know what words to use or the names of everyone in my family, I still know that she loves me. That is really all I can ask for.
I am starting Team Betty to raise money to help others who are facing some of the same problems my grandmother is fighting today. I hope the Boston Marathon is the first appearance of Team Betty and that others will join me down the road. I have been preparing for this race since October. This cause, and having the support of my family & friends, keeps me determined and motivated when having to run through pain, fatigue, and a cold Wisconsin winter. Thank you for all of your love & support.
