Thankfully, the condition is not currently affecting moment mum's memory, reasoning and visual perception and she is able to function normally in many routine daily living activities despite the aphasia.
Mum's condition is relatively 'new' and there are separate classifications of the illness still being identified. There is therefore very little treatment for PPA beyond prescribing medication more usually used for Alzheimer's and other similar conditions. Given that Alzheimer's treatments themselves have only limited effectiveness for that condition, they are even less effective for PPA.
I want to contribute to research into PPA treatment and have signed up to run the New York Marathon in November and am raising money for a US charity called Alzheimers Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF). ADDF funds research into drug treatment for a range of conditions including PPA. They fund research over the world and fund a range of projects in the UK and Ireland.
I will spend a total of 20 weeks training for the marathon, and by the end will be running almost 50 miles per week. This is a massive commitment, and I want to raise as much money as I can to help find treatment for this terrible illness. My target is $3,000 although the more I can raise the better!
It would be very much appreciated if you could support me in this endeavour and sponsor me using the link below which passes all sponsorship money directly to ADDF.
Even £1 per mile (I will run 26.2 on the day) would be fantastic!
I am paying for my own flights and accommodation so none of your money comes to me.
ADDF provides funding to leading scientists who are conducting the most promising, innovative Alzheimer’s drug research worldwide. The mission of the ADDF is to rapidly accelerate the discovery of drugs to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's disease and other related illnesses like PPA. Donations to the ADDF New York marathon team, Runners for Alzheimer's Research, directly support research into new treatments for this devastating disease. By supporting drug discovery research, the ADDF marathon team will help conquer Alzheimer's and PPA! To learn more about the ADDF, please visit their website.
