BENEFITING: Alzheimer's Association
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Last April 2016, I had the privilege of running the 120th Boston Marathon and secure a qualifying time and bib for the following year. In the spirit of making the most of every opportunity, this year I also want to run for the Alzheimer's Association in honor of my Nonna.
My Nonna, Frances Mercadante, has been suffering from dementia for the last 10 years. It is difficult for me and my family to see her spirit and health fade. She has been a very influential person in all our lives. Not only did she give me my middle name of Frances, but played a vital role in raising me. She drove me to so many soccer practices, piano lessons to count. She was stubborn and tough on all of us, but in a way that instilled unyielding virtues of family and perserverance. So this year, I run for her spirit, her stubbornness, her tireless love.
A little about Nonna....
Nonna's maiden name is Posco and she grew up in Fitchburg, MA with her three sisters and parents. Her parents were Italian immigrants and her mother grew up in the Northend, blocks away from where I currently reside. She married my Papa G., Nicholas Mercadante, and had four children. She dedicated her life to education and was a elementary school teacher for over forty years. She was very involved in the local community, and earned the honor of Italian Woman of the Year in 2004. She has seven grand childre, 6 girls and 1 boy.
